Analog dials, an amber readout, no purpose you can name. Built to sit beside a keyboard.

Field Unit desk object with analog dials and an amber readout
§ 01 — The object

Field Unit is an instrument without an instrument's excuse. Two analog dials, one amber readout, a toggle with a satisfying amount of travel. It measures the room — temperature, pressure, the drift of the hour — and reports it in a format nobody asked for.

The case is folded steel with a powder finish that keeps its matte under desk lamps. The readout is a real vacuum-fluorescent panel, sourced from the last runs still being made, which is the honest reason this object exists at all.

It is meant to live beside a keyboard, at the edge of the light, doing its small job for years. If someone asks what it does, the correct answer is that it is on.
